Question for religious atheists (I asked early this morning but there's more people here now)...?

The term religion may have negative connotations due to horrible acts being committed in its name. The end point is - does it really matter what other people think? Other than a supervisor at work, a best friend, spouse, etc - how much weight does people’s opinions have on our lives? Do their opinions carry any “weight”? And if they do - why?
