My dog doesn't seem to like or trust me.?

Snoogie is a 3 year old neutered male. He is a very quirky shar pei. If I give him any sort of treat, he sniffs it suspiciously, will gently take it in his mouth, then run off, spit it out, sniff and paw at it THEN eat it. I have NEVER seen a dog do this? Wtf? Lol. Then if I get on the floor with him, he gets anxiety. If I try to lay next to him, he'll move away from me and won't sleep, he'll just lay far away from me and watch me with at least one eye open. I don't hit him and I've had him since he was a pup. What's his problem? He's always bee like this and I find it so peculiar! I play with him and pet him a lot and scratch him whenever he itches. I am beginning to think that he just doesn't trust me. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but it boggles my mind lol.
